What is an XML Formatter?

An XML Formatter (also called a prettifier or beautifier) takes compact or minified XML and restructures it with consistent indentation and line breaks, making the document hierarchy easy to read and navigate.

This tool works entirely client-side: paste your XML, click Format, and get syntax-highlighted output with a collapsible tree view — no data ever leaves your browser.

Features

  • Format / Prettify — Indent and align XML for maximum readability.
  • Minify — Strip all unnecessary whitespace to reduce file size.
  • Validate — Detect well-formedness errors with clear error messages.
  • Syntax Highlighting — Color-coded tags, attributes, values, and comments.
  • Tree View — Explore the document as a collapsible node tree.
  • Copy & Download — Copy the result to clipboard or save as a .xml file.
  • Line Wrap — Toggle word-wrap for long lines.

Common XML Use Cases

  • Web services — SOAP, REST APIs, RSS / Atom feeds.
  • Configuration files — Maven pom.xml, Android AndroidManifest.xml, Spring beans.
  • Office formats — Office Open XML (.docx, .xlsx), OpenDocument (.odt).
  • Data interchange — SVG images, MathML, DocBook, XHTML.
  • Sitemaps — XML sitemaps for SEO (sitemap.xml).

XML vs JSON

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a text-based format for structured data. Unlike JSON, XML supports comments, attributes, mixed content (text and elements together), namespaces, and document type declarations. It is widely used in enterprise systems, document formats, and legacy APIs.

JSON has largely replaced XML for new web APIs due to its smaller size and simpler syntax, but XML remains dominant in many industries including finance (FIX, SWIFT), healthcare (HL7), publishing (JATS), and government data exchange.
